Crimson Desert isn’t your typical RPG, but that’s a strength, not a flaw. It’s a pure open-world action-adventure that leans heavily into every part of that label.

The world of Pywel is massive, atmospheric, and packed with detail. This is where the adventure kicks in-beyond the main story, there’s a ton of side content and hidden locations to find if you’re willing to look. It’s an open world that actually respects your freedom, letting you carve out your own path across the continent.

The real challenge lies in the Action part. There are no traditional difficulty settings here. While roaming the map is generally straightforward, but specific zones and enemies scale their skills to keep you on your toes. Expect some heavy-hitting encounters. Taking down bosses or solving environmental puzzles isn't just about mashing buttons, you’ll need actual skill and a solid grasp of your surroundings to survive.

You’ll control a single character rather than a full party, but the narrative weaves in multiple key figures that give the journey some serious personality.

Quick Tips & Tricks for Crimson Desert

• Fast Travel in Crimson Desert. To fast travel, you need to find an Abyss Nexus. There are dozens of these scattered around, looking like large circular plates on the ground. They show up as big question marks on your map when you get close. Just stand on one to activate it. Once it's unlocked, you can warp to it by selecting it directly from your main map. You can find the nearest Abyss Nexus between Hernand Castle and Hernand Town.
• There are no character levels - Crimson Desert doesn't have traditional leveling, so your character's power depends entirely on passive Skills bought with Artifacts and the quality of your gear. Keep your equipment upgraded to stay competitive.
• How to uncover map? The Crimson Desert map starts covered in fog of war. You can reveal it just by exploring, but there is a faster way. Pywel has eight Bells scattered across the land, and each one clears a section of the map. You can track these through the Toll of Pywel quest line, but you don't actually need the quest to start ringing them. The first Bell is easy to find early on atop the tower in Hernand Town. Once you hit all eight, the entire map opens up. Keep in mind that clearing the fog doesn't automatically mark every point of interest, you still have to physically visit most locations to see them on your map.
• Interacting with the world. Crimson Desert features a wide variety of interactions and actions, but they aren’t always available. To see what you can do, walk up to a person or object and hit the Interaction button (CTRL on PC) to pull up the list of available options.
• Walking, Jog, Run and Sprint - Walking is your default speed when using the analog stick or directional keys. To pick up the pace and Jog, just press the Sprint button once (Shift on PC, X on consoles). If you want to Run, double-tap that same button; it’s a toggle, so you’ll keep moving until you come to a full stop. To hit a full-on Sprint, you need to mash the button repeatedly. Keep in mind that sprinting eats through your stamina bar fast, so use it sparingly.
• Jumping - Naturally, your jump distance depends on your momentum, so the faster you're moving, the further you'll clear. The real game-changer is the Precision Jump, which is a life-saver when you're navigating narrow beams or tight ledges. Before you leap, hit the Interaction button and aim at your landing spot to stick the landing every time.
• Climbing and stamina - Scaling walls and cliffs drains your stamina, so don't try to go too far in one shot. If your bar runs dry before you reach the top, you're going to lose your grip and fall.
• Using Lanterns - Lanterns do more than just light your way in the dark; they also help you track down hidden secrets, trails, and clues. Keep one handy if you don't want to miss out on what's tucked away in the shadows.
• You heal by eating, which is essential when you're in the middle of a fight. Make sure to cook your ingredients first over a campfire or in cooking pots.
• Pet every animal you run into. Once an animal's trust hits 100, it follows you around and picks up loot from fallen enemies. You can only earn up to 25 trust points per animal each day.
• Building Trust - Talking nice with NPCs earns you Trust, and every faction or character type tracks their own standing with you. Make sure to chat up as many people as possible to stay on their good side and keep those trust levels climbing.
• Read documents - Once you’ve looked through flyers, recipes, and letters, you can just sell them off.

Keyboard or Controller?

If you're playing on a console, you're already set. As a controller veteran, you’ll likely pick things up fast, even if the UI and controls feel a bit off to some players at first.

When it comes to the PC version, Crimson Desert is clearly built with a controller in mind, especially for combat. That said, I decided to stick with the keyboard, mostly because of the game's old-school MMO roots. It works well enough, though I’ll admit I occasionally wish I had a third hand. I’ve included the key bindings I printed out for myself below to help you keep track of everything.
