How to Play Dawnwalker: Quick Guide

This Quick Guide to The Blood of Dawnwalker answers the exact questions I ran into right at the start. Consider it a short list of early-game tips.

Time Segments as Currency

In The Blood of Dawnwalker, time acts as a core gameplay mechanic. Think of time as a currency you spend on specific actions rather than a ticking clock forcing you to rush. Most time consuming activities trigger on your prompt, showing you the exact cost before you commit.

Activities that do NOT consume time:

  • Exploring and uncovering new map areas. Travel and sightsee as much as you want without burning time.
  • Fighting random enemies you run into while exploring.
  • General exploration tasks like harvesting resources, looting chests, discovering Shrines (fast travel nodes), eavesdropping on NPCs, and watching the world.
  • Managing inventory, changing gear, reading books or documents, and trading with vendors.
  • Side quests that lack an hourglass icon.
  • Solving puzzles.

Activities that CONSUME time:

  • Major story events, branching dialogue, and main cutscenes.
  • Main quests and side quests marked with an hourglass icon. The number next to the icon shows how many time segments the action costs. While some quest steps are free, specific marked objectives will charge you time.
  • Character progression, training, and learning new skills.
  • Crafting and alchemy, scaling with the complexity of the item.
  • Resting, sleeping, and manually passing time.
Time Segment Icon indicates actions that consume time.

You can track Time progression on the Time Bar, which is divided into eight Time Segments. When all Time Segments are filled, Day turns into Night, or vice versa.

Day and Night: Distinct Gameplay

After completing the Prologue, the division between day and night becomes the core of The Blood of Dawnwalker.

During the day, you are Human and live in the human world. At night, you become a Vampire (Vrakhir). The gameplay shifts entirely depending on the time of day.

Day: Human

  • Fight with a sword like a standard mercenary.
  • Use a specific daytime gear and inventory loadout.
  • Use Witchcraft skills.
  • Restore health by eating human food.
  • Access Haunted Sites and other daytime exclusive locations.
  • Complete daytime quests and use day specific solutions (Sun Icon).
  • Find daytime secrets and solve specific puzzles.
  • Fight daytime specific enemies.

Night: Vampire

  • Fight as a Vampire using your claws.
  • Use a specific nighttime gear and inventory loadout.
  • Use Vampire skills.
  • Restore health by drinking blood.
  • Access Scouting Towers and other nighttime exclusive locations.
  • Complete nighttime quests and use night specific solutions (Moon Icon).
  • Find nighttime secrets and solve specific puzzles.
  • Fight nighttime specific enemies.

Both Day and Night offer 8 Time Segments each. How you spend them is entirely up to you. For example, if you prefer playing as a Vampire, you can spend your daytime segments learning new skills, which consumes time.

Both Human and Vampire forms are important to the story. Avoid focusing your progression heavily on just one side.

Fast Travel: Shrines

Shrines

There are over 90 Shrines in Vale Sangora that serve as Fast Travel points.

You must discover a Shrine to make it active. Fast Travel only works between active Shrines, meaning you cannot jump to one from a random location. Fast Travel does not consume Time Segments.

The other major use for Shrines is learning new Perks. You buy these using Skill Points earned through Leveling Up. Keep in mind that learning advanced Perks consumes Time Segments.

Scouting Towers

Scouting Towers

Scouting Towers play a major role in the game, letting you scan the surrounding area for nearby activities.

You can only access them at night using Vampire skills like Shadowstep or Planeshift. There are 11 Scouting Towers to find across Vale Sangora.

Difficulty Markers

As the game progresses, Coen gains levels and improves his skills. The difficulty of the challenges he faces does not scale directly with his experience, meaning there is no full level scaling. Tasks that seem extremely hard early on become much easier over time.

Colored skull icons indicate the current difficulty of a specific challenge.

These Difficulty Markers apply to quests, enemies, and entire regions.

  • no icon Similar or lower difficulty
  • Increased difficulty
  • Serious challenge
  • Every mistake will be fatal

Every map region has a fixed minimum and maximum difficulty cap. Enemies only scale to Coen's level if he falls within that specific range.

Loot dropped by enemies always scales to the player's current level.

Focus Mode

Focus Mode is one of the most useful features in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

On PC: Press and hold the Right Mouse Button RMB, on Consoles: Press and hold the Left Trigger LT/L2 to heighten your perception.

Use Focus Mode as often as possible. It costs nothing and helps you spot many locations you would otherwise miss.

Focus Mode reveals hidden elements like quest clues, blood trails, footprints, secret stashes, and other tracks. It also highlights interactive objects, usable devices, chests, and gatherable crafting materials.

Important things become highlighted in Focus Mode:

  • Golden: quest related people or objects.
  • Red: hostile characters.
  • White: containers with loot or harvestable plants.

Dawnwalker: Prologue Time Management

The Prologue in The Blood of Dawnwalker plays out a bit differently than the rest of the game. While it does a solid job teaching you the basics, it often leaves players confused, so let's break it down.

AD 1347 - Somewhere In The Carpathians ...

Do NOT consume time.

The opening cutscene sets up the backstory. The Black Death has reached Vale Sangora in the Carpathian Mountains, and soldiers working for the local ruler, Skender Dagosti, are hunting down and killing the infected to contain the outbreak.

Our protagonist, Coen, flees with his sick younger sister, Lunka, to keep her out of the soldiers' sights. A violent clash breaks out between the troops and the Vrakhiri (Vampires). While Lunka gets cured of the plague, she ends up infected with Vrakhiri blood instead.

All Good Things

The idyllic scene that follows, showing Coen scything grain in the evening fields, is actually a dream vision.

Before taking control, you select your difficulty setting. Do not feel pressured to crank it up, the game gets surprisingly tough in places, and picking a higher difficulty does not change the quality of the narrative.

You meet Coen's family:

  • Esme: Coen’s mother, once cheerful but recently distant and withdrawn.
  • Lunka: His younger sister, the one you rescued from the plague.
  • Mirto: His younger brother, still a child and full of energy.
  • Pieter: Coen’s father, a former mercenary and miner turned farmer.
  • Yanna: His second sister, nearly a young adult.

This marks the start of the core tutorial in The Blood of Dawnwalker. As dusk approaches, you must track down Lunka, who ran off into the woods. The sequence introduces basic movement and combat mechanics.

This section corresponds to the quest "All Good Things", and it does not consume any time segments.

The tutorial wraps up with a church scene where your entire family is slaughtered by the Vrakhiri. It remains a dream sequence, though every sign points to it being a prophetic warning.

Laslea Glen - inside village

You wake up in your house in Laslea Glen. You are still in the Prologue.

It is morning, and the culmination of this part of the game is the Blood Mass taking place in the evening. This event triggers no matter what you do throughout the day. The quest "Sacred Covenant" starts automatically, irreversibly altering the village and locking you out of several side quests.

Time is critical here. You have 8 Time Segments to spend on tasks that consume time.

Keep these in mind:

  • Save your game the second you wake up at home, making it easy to reload if you run out of time.
  • Avoid training at Shrines during this phase, or be careful not to pick skills that burn time.
  • Do not get caught stealing, as getting caught drains your Time Segments.
  • Double-check how many Time Segments a specific quest requires, and look for choices that shorten it.

You will not have enough time to finish every side quest in the Prologue.

Do not worry about it, as some have zero impact on the broader story. If you want to experience every quest, reload your initial home save and try different paths.

Essential Quests in Prologue

You should prioritize these side quests before the evening Blood Mass:

  • Withering Away: The most important quest here. It lets you save your mother Esme and introduces Anca, a key character. It splits into two parts: before visiting Anca, and after returning home to brew the cure (2 Time Segments).
  • Page-Turner: An extra quest from Anca that you complete alongside Withering Away (1 Time Segment).
  • Like Father, Like Son: A quest tied to Pieter (1 Time Segment). Save this for your final Time Segment right before the Blood Mass.

Optional Quests which you will manage to complete

These side quests are only available during the Prologue before the Blood Mass. Finishing them affects optional objectives in "Sacred Covenant":

  • Blasphemy (1 Time Segment).
  • Deep Down (1 Time Segment): Move fast and complete this immediately after taking it on.
  • On the Run (2 Time Segments): Iorgu needs you to track down his missing pig. I decided to select this quest because completing it actually matters later in the playthrough. It earns you your very own Pet Pig.

Quests You Will Miss, because you don't have enough Time Segments

There is not enough time to complete these before evening, and they expire after the Blood Mass:

  • Live Bait (1 Time Segment): Refuse to play with the kids on the way to the river by selecting "Stop complaining right now". Failing to do so burns an extra Time Segment.
  • Someone Needs A Lesson (1 Time Segment)
  • Disturbed (1 Time Segment): When you return to Crina and hand over "Kvet's pendant", select "I really need to go" to avoid losing another Time Segment to a reburial.

Quests You Can Do Later, after Blood Mass

These side quests are found while exploring around Laslea Glen, but there is no rush to complete them before evening. You can finish them during the Prologue after clearing "Sacred Covenant" and "Bad Blood":

  • Enter Not
  • Dead Drop
  • If a Tree Falls in a Forest…
  • Into the Den
  • Bandits’s Treasure Map: Laslea Glen

Dawnwalker: Time in Open World

During the evening of your first day in the Prologue, the Blood Mass event triggers after you spend 8 time segments. This happens no matter what you did or did not do, and it ties directly into the "Sacred Covenant" quest.

The strict time limits of the Prologue drop here, and the flow of time returns to normal.

Next up is the "Bad Blood" quest. You get moved to the Silver Mines and have to figure out a way to escape.

The Prologue wraps up with "Smoke and Ashes", a quest that finally lets you leave the village.

You are now free to check out the rest of Laslea Glen north of the village gate. This is your chance to finish any older quests you skipped, provided they were not wiped out by the Blood Mass event. At this point, the game shifts into a true open world experience. You can go wherever you want.

After Prologue you get 30 days and 30 nights to finish the main objective in Dawnwalker and save your family. Days and nights each contain 8 time segments, giving you a daily total of 16 time segments per day. As I noted earlier, time does not tick away while you wander around. It functions as a currency you spend on specific actions marked in the game.

Having 480 total Time Segments is plenty to comfortably finish the main story, though you probably will not have enough time to explore every single edge of the map. Running out of those 30 days and nights does not end the game. Your main objective changes instead. Certain endings are locked out, but entirely new ones become available.

My basic advice on the time limit is simple. Skip staring nervously at the day counter, at least on your first run. Just play naturally and focus on pushing the story forward.

Endings in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The Blood of Dawnwalker offers several different endings. The terms "Good Ending" and "Bad Ending" are not judgments on the quality of your playthrough. Every ending is canonically valid. We use these labels simply to describe the narrative consequences of your choices.

Ending: Time Runs Out

Time Runs Out is considered the "bad ending, but you can keep exploring" in Dawnwalker, this occurs when you run out of time.

If the 30-day limit for the main quest expires, your family dies, but you keep playing.

Requirements for Time Runs Out

  • Fail to reach any story ending within the 30-day time limit.

Consequences

  • The time limits are gone. You can play as long as you want and keep fighting the Vrakhiri.
  • Brencis ritually sacrifices your entire family to fuel his coronation ceremonies, they are dead.
  • The "Save Your Family" quest changes to "Get Revenge".
  • Achievements "In the Nick of Time" and "The Turncoat" become locked.
  • You can still complete other storyline.

Post-Game

"The Time Runs Out" ending is the only one that lets you keep playing after finale.

Ending: The Folk Hero

The Folk Hero is considered the "good ending" in Dawnwalker and stands out as the most classic conclusion you might expect.

You defeat Brencis alone and save your family.

Requirements for The Folk Hero

  • Stay within the 30-day time limit.
  • Defeat Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe.
  • Reach maximum Infamy.
  • Reject help from your allies.
  • Enter Brencis Castle alone.
  • During the "A Deal with the Devil" quest that triggers the following day, select the dialogue option "Enough. Time to End this" to fight Brencis solo.
  • Kill Brencis yourself.

Alternative Method 1: You can kill Brencis during the Prologue in your very first encounter with him. This is incredibly difficult to pull off but entirely possible.

Alternative Method 2: After finishing the Prologue, you can skip the main story and head straight to Brencis Castle to take him down. At night, use your vampire skills to scale the castle walls. As you near the top, the game skips straight to the final battle sequence. You need high-level Planeshift and Shadowstep skills for this approach.

Alternative Method 3: Once the Prologue ends, use the side entrance to Brencis Castle located northwest of the Vedera Shallows Shrine. You must complete the "In the Name Of The Father" quest and recruit Father Florin from the underground ruins beneath Svartrau City first.

Alternative Method 4: After the Prologue, defeat Georghe "The Rabid Duke" at Racovitza's Bandit Camp. This grants you the Side Gate Key, giving you access to Brencis Castle through the side gate so you can confront and kill Brencis.

Consequences

  • You kill Brencis in the physical world and destroy his Grotesque Ascendant form in Anachora.
  • You save your family (remember to save your mother, Esme, for the first time during the Prologue).
  • You free Vale Sangora, though you leave the region slowly slipping into anarchy without a ruler.
  • You also earn the "In the Nick of Time" achievement for saving your family before the 30-day limit expires.

Post-Game

  • This ending concludes your Dawnwalker playthrough.
  • You cannot continue playing to wrap up unfinished storylines after Epilogue.
  • If you want to keep playing, you must save your game before the final fight and load it later.
  • The game will give you a clear "Point of No Return" warning.

Ending: The Knyazmaker

The Knyazmaker is considered the "good ending" in Dawnwalker and stands out as the standard conclusion to the story.

You defeat Brencis, during the day as a mortal (in human form) alongside the Manumits (human resistance group) and with the help of Crake (Marat), and save your family.

Requirements for The Knyazmaker

  • Stay within the 30-day time limit.
  • Finish Crake's questline, from "The Firebrand" quest to "Fall Before Dusk" Quest.
  • A developed Swordmastery skill tree.
  • Defeat Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe - taking them out early lets you skip the fight with them in finale and grants you extra skills.
  • Reach maximum Infamy.
  • Initiate the alliance during the 'Rise at Dawn' quest.
  • Enter Brencis Castle during the day.
  • Catalin and Crake must survive.
  • Kill Brencis together with Crake.

Consequences

  • You kill Brencis in the physical world and destroy his Grotesque Ascendant form in Anachora.
  • You save your family (remember to save your mother, Esme, for the first time during the Prologue).
  • You free Vale Sangora, but hand the region over to human rule. Catalin proves to be a tyrant no better than the previous rulers. The Uriashi face persecution, and the plague returns.

Ending: The Patricide

The Patricide is considered the "good ending" in Dawnwalker and stands out as the standard conclusion to the story.

You defeat Brencis, during the night as a vrakhir (in vampire form) with the help of Lacra (rogue vrakhir, enemy of Brencis), and save your family.

Requirements for The Patricide

  • Stay within the 30-day time limit.
  • Finish Lacra's questline, from "A Friend Like This" quest to "Midnight Reckoning" quest.
  • Defeat Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe - taking them out early lets you skip the fight with them in finale and grants you extra skills.
  • Reach maximum Infamy.
  • Initiate the alliance during the "Midnight Reckoning" quest.
  • Enter Brencis Castle during the night.
  • Reject Brencis's offer to betray Lacra.
  • Help Lacra heal during the fight. You get the Mandrake Ward perk earlier during the 'The Night of Horrors' quest.
  • Kill Brencis together with Lacra.

Consequences

  • You kill Brencis in the physical world and destroy his Grotesque Ascendant form in Anachora.
  • You save your family (remember to save your mother, Esme, for the first time during the Prologue).
  • You free Vale Sangora, Lacra has no interest in ruling and leaves the valley.

Ending: The Turncoat

The Turncoat is considered the "bad ending" in Dawnwalker and serves as an opportunistic conclusion if your only priority is your family.

You skip the fight with Brencis and side with him instead. You betray your allies, leaving them to die, but your family survives.

Requirements for The Turncoat

  • Stay within the 30-day time limit.
  • Defeat Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe.
  • Reach maximum Infamy.
  • Initiate "A Deal with the Devil" quest.
  • During the negotiation select: "I just want my family back" and "I'll do it".
  • Avoid aggressive dialogue choices when speaking to Brencis.
  • Reveal Manumit rebel hideout, "Where Loyalty Lies" in Crake's questline.
  • Mark hideout door with blood.
  • Finalize deal with Brencis.

Consequences

  • You skip the fight with Brencis and don't kill him.
  • You save your family (remember to save your mother, Esme, for the first time during the Prologue).
  • Crake dies during the attack on the hideout.
  • Brencis remains the absolute ruler of Vale Sangora.
  • Laslea Glen remains a separate enclave.

Ending: A Hero They Deserve

A Hero They Deserve is considered the "early bad ending" in Dawnwalker. Coen fails to handle the challenge and flees Vale Sangora.

You end your adventure by fleeing Vale Sangora.

Requirements for A Hero They Deserve

  • Complete the Prologue.
  • Upgrade the Shadowstep ability.
  • Find the Coward's Path Shrine in Briar Sloughs (the northwestern part of the region).
  • Head west, cross the ruined bridge using Shadowstep, and follow the road.
  • Select the [leave the valley forever] option.

Consequences

You have no idea what actually happened because you fled. Your family is likely sacrificed during Brencis's coronation, and the situation in the valley remains the same, only growing worse.

Post-Game

  • This ending concludes your Dawnwalker playthrough.
  • You cannot continue playing to wrap up unfinished storylines.
  • There is no Epilogue.
  • If you want to keep playing, you must save your game before the final fight and load it later.
  • The game will give you a clear "Point of No Return" warning.

Ending: Together Forever

Together Forever is considered the "early bad ending" in Dawnwalker.

Coen remains trapped in a dream illusion, lured by the vision of a happy family life.

Requirements for Together Forever

  • Fail to break the dream loop four times during the "Home Sweet Home" quest in Silts Tower (southwest).
  • Do not use the well to wake up.
  • Tell Esme you want to stay with your family.

Consequences

The happy family life is just an illusion. You die of exhaustion in the real world while still dreaming.

Post-Game

  • This ending concludes your Dawnwalker playthrough.
  • You cannot continue playing to wrap up unfinished storylines.
  • There is no Epilogue.
  • If you want to keep playing, you must save your game before quest and load it later.
