The Bittersweet Toast Walkthrough
The Bittersweet Toast is an optional but highly recommended side quest. It aims to weaken Ambrus before Coen duels him.
You can activate this mission while speaking with Iulian Codrin by selecting [You have a plan?] during The Gilded Gauntlet. It is a long, demanding quest that costs 10 Time Segments, but the payoff is worth it. Completing it makes the upcoming fight with Ambrus significantly easier. Start this quest at night so the second half falls during the day, which is required to cast Astral Communion.
How to Save Iulian:
Throughout The Bittersweet Toast, exhaust all positive dialogue options to get as much information out of Iulian as possible. Do the same for any documents, recipes, and [Inspect] prompts. You have to do this if you want to save his life. To give you some context: Iulian plans to poison Ambrus with his own blood and intends to die in the process, believing he deserves it. You can slip a Tatzelwurm Gland into his brew later to save him. The catch is you cannot find or add this ingredient unless you first discover his death wish and learn that Vera anticipated it by securing the gland as a cure. If this sounds confusing right now, just remember to read every note and talk about everything.
The Bittersweet Toast Walkthrough:
- During The Gilded Gauntlet, accept Erdene's invitation and follow her to meet Iulian Codrin.
- Speak with Iulian, choose [You have a plan?], and agree to his proposal by selecting [Let's give it a try.].
- Follow Iulian to Vera's Hut. Kill the wolves along the way and [Inspect] the body.
- Search the hut. [Inspect] everything and take "Vera's Old Letter" from the chest.
- Discuss your findings with Iulian.
- Look for Vera's traps. Head into the swamp and check them.
- You will find tracks on the ground. Follow them.
- Inspect Vera's body and talk to Iulian.
- Find the ritual scroll by inspecting the body.
- Follow Vera's tracks using Focus Mode.
- Search the clearing and [Inspect] the area.
- Closer to the cave, you will find Poison Weeds and Vera's Lizard Note on the ground. Read the note.
- You should receive a new quest step: (Optional) Find the lizard's lair.
- Enter the cave, kill the Pale Ravager, and loot the Tatzelwurm Gland quest item.
- Give Iulian the scroll and discuss your next steps.
- Finish making the brew at the sarcophagus. Select [add the lizard gland] to save Iulian, then choose [finish the brew].
- Perform the ritual. You need to light all 5 pillars and kill the enemies trying to stop you.
- Do not forget to loot the bodies.
- Now you must force Iulian to drink his half of the Ritual Brew. He will resist, but you need to hold him to your agreement.
- Say your goodbyes. You will see him again during the duel with Ambrus.
- This completes The Bittersweet Toast. You can now return to The Gilded Gauntlet quest.
The Bittersweet Toast Consequences:
- If you added the Lizard Gland to the Ritual Brew, Iulian survives the duel with Ambrus.
- A poisoned Ambrus is much weaker in the upcoming fight. His health will constantly drain from the toxin.
