Balance your team
A good team is a balanced team, it's a rule in games like Baldur's Gate 3 where you control more than one character at a time. Bet on diversity, different character classes, different races, different professions. Change team members depending on the task ahead.
Collect everything you find
You will find many items during your adventure in Baldur's Gate 3, often you will not know if they will be useful one day, so collect everything. Once you find your Camp, there will be a chest that will allow you to free up inventory space. Your Companions can also carry found items.
- Use Left Alt to higlight lootable containers and items.
- So we collect all the plants we find.
- We search every corpse.
- We open every chest, wardrobe or other piece of furniture.
- We carefully watch each item or part of the scenery that is interactive.
Chat with everyone
Baldur's Gate 3 is not a killing game, it's a talking game. Talk to everyone about everything, being careful not to discourage your interlocutor. Talk to your Companions especially often, your Camp is a good place to do that.
Always save your game
Don't just rely on autosave. Save your game before every major location and on another save before every conversation or activity in that location, so that you can easily go back in the game. This will be of more use to you than a sharp sword and deadly spells.
Companions
Some allies will stick by your side through thick and thin.
Companions can join you on your adventures as part of your party, or wait in camp until you call upon them. All companions gain experience at the same time, regardless of if they fought by your side or stayed in camp. When companions are in your active party, you can control their movements and actions as if they were an avatar.
Remember - these are thinking and feeling people, with their own opinions and goals. If their attitude towards you drops low enough, they will leave - but if it is high enough, you may form a close bond with them.
Followers
Some characters will join your party as a temporary ally. They will follow a companion or avatar, denoted by whose portrait they appear next to. Selecting this follower allows you to take direct control of its movement and actions.
Followers cannot pick up items or interact in dialogues for you.
Waypoints
Specific locations across Faerûn are marked with glowing transportation sigils - Waypoints. Canny adventurers can use these Waypoints to immediately travel to locations they've been to before.
Camp
You will gain access to the Camp almost at the beginning of the Baldur's Gate 3 storyline, when you discover the first Waypoint. You will then be able to teleport to Camp.
Camp is a place of respite, recuperation, and reflection. You can talk to your companions about your adventure so far, and choose who will join you in future escapades. You can also store items and take long rests here. Visitors may come and go from your camp throughout your adventure - be they friends or foes.
The camp will grow as the story progresses.
After you finish successfully "Explore the Ruins" Quest in Ravaged Beach, Withers will join your Camp.
Withers is a strange wraith that commands many powers: he allows you to resurrect allies, hire help (Hirelings), and change your class. For a price, of course.
Skill Checks
Some actions require a dice roll to determine the outcome - called an Ability or Skill check. If your roll is higher than a particular number, the Difficulty Class, you will succeed. Rolling a 1 will automatically fail a check, and rolling a 20 will automatically succeed. These rolls can be modified by Skill or Ability scores - the higher the number, the higher your roll will be. Ability scores can be increased by levelling up or by acquiring special items, and your Skills can be increased by becoming Proficient or an Expert in them.
Some checks will happen Passively in the world, and others will be Active checks performed by you during dialogues, lockpicking and trap disarmament. Active Checks let you cast spells to enhance your roll; and Inspiration can be used to reroll if you fail a check.
Thieves' Tools
Thieves' Tools enable you to open locks based on a Sleight of Hand Check. The tools break on an unsuccessful attempt. Thieves' Tools are very important in the game, so collect every set you find.
Disarming Traps
No dungeon would be complete without a retinue of traps - some obvious, some hidden to all but the most perceptive. You can use a Trap Disarm Kit to make a Sleight Of Hand check to neutralise these traps when they are revealed in the world. Be careful, as a failed check will break your kit and trigger the trap. Collect all Trap Disarm Kit you will find.
Alchemy
You can craft your own potions, poisons, and elixirs using Alchemy. Gather ingredients to distil into extracts, and experiment to brew wondrous solutions.
Gather all ingredients you will find, especially plants.
