Both ELEX I and ELEX II take place in the same Magalan world. ELEX II happens chronologically much later.
Although the world in the new version of ELEX clearly resembles the world from the previous installment of the game, time passes and many locations have changed significantly, although their geographic layout has remained unchanged.
It is untrue that the play area in ELEX II is smaller than in ELEX I.
In ELEX II we are losing the western part of Magalan, but we are gaining a large area in the south-eastern part of the continent, formerly a desert, now reclaimed by The Berserkers and turned into a "green wonderland".
Additionally, we gain a large zone in the north-east.
More importantly, the content of the game world is "denser and more tightly packed", which with a similar size gives us larger and richer areas.
Additionally, there is a 3rd dimension option, we can now float and fly with the Jetpack.
